Cruising is one of the most flexible, enjoyable vacations out there — but only when you know how to make it work for you. Germany's busiest port city has a personality all its own, rebellious nightlife in the St Pauli district, Fischbrötchen piled high at harbor stands, ferry rides along the Elbe that double as the best skyline view in town. There's even a glass concert hall built right on top of a historic warehouse. I don't know when I'll get there, but I know it's on my list now, and I wanted it on yours too.

When I debriefed with Robert and Jen after their Greece honeymoon, I could hear it in their voices — the food, the history, the quiet mornings, the unexpected rain. These were two people who genuinely did not want to come home.
